Kim Chi: RuPaul’s Drag Race Season Eight Profile

For the last couple of weeks I have been writing (short) profiles of the competitors in this upcoming season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Can you believe the season premiere is a week from today?

What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name Kim Chi? For me, it is a Japanese friend of mine, who told me of a rather unpleasant relationship he had with a Korean woman that must have ended badly. He said that she ate a substantial volume of kimchi, which is a rather pungent fermented vegetable dish which has its origins in Korea. Think sauerkraut but for other vegetables. She ate so much that the smell was, shall we say, everywhere. Let your imagination go wild on that thought for a moment.

Kim Chi the competitor this season, on the other hand? Apparently Kim Chi has Smeagol on her mind!

WCT: Whether you make it to Snatch Game round or not, who would your choice to portray?

NL: I love female comedians, modern day and old school, from Kathy Griffin to Lucille Ball. Guess you’ll have to tune in!

KC: That one Sparta warrior in the movie 300. Perhaps Smeagol, also known as Gollum, from Lord of the Rings. I think I look just like him.

Kim Chi has some fun posts on her Instagram page, such as this one:

Her drag queen life would not appear to go back very far, as according to this interview from this last year,

1. When and why did you begin doing drag?

I began drag on November 2nd in Chicago. I’m a Halloween queen! Pearl asked me to go out in drag for fun with her so we did! The rest is herstory.

But… then you can quite easily find videos that are four and five years old like this one:

So how long has Kim Chi been doing drag?

Does it matter? I suppose your past isn’t really relevant once you get up on that main stage… unless you’re planning on shedding a few crocodile tears, that is! Tomorrow: Derrick Barry!
