Hope, realizing that it would soon be Sof Zman Krias Shema, grips her coffee with one hand and with all of the kavana she can summon up begins.
(explanation for non-jews – it is obligatory upon we of the jewish faith to recite the “Shema” which is three different sections of text from the Torah. The obligation is to say it twice a day – once in the morning (before a certain time) and once in the evening. ‘Sof Zman Krias Shema’ refers to the latest time to say it. The first section of the shema (after which the whole thing is named) is said with one covering ones eyes – makes it harder to get distracted and easier to focus. 🙂
