Only is one of my favourite words of late – at least in the British English sense – I don’t know how commonly this use is but it is quite spiffy. Perhaps Mark can enlighten us as to how it came to be used like this.
Only – except that. Used to bring up a contrary point.
Mark – Let’s go out to the chippy today for lunch.
Gordon – I’d like to say okay, only we’ve gone to chippy every day this last week.
It’s just not used that way in the states. Quite interesting.
